Sustainable and Cost-Effective Facility

Project Description

  • Client:
    Oklahoma Office of State Finance
  • Location:
    Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Office of State Finance needed a new central location to consolidate employees and offices that were previously in five separate sites in Oklahoma City.

Benham provided design services for the new Oklahoma Office of State Finance facility, which achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver (LEED® Silver) Certification. The building is unique in that the design allows for it to operate using its own power source, if needed, helping ensure that critical operations continue even in adverse conditions. The design includes a central plant containing water-cooled chillers and a sophisticated power center, which includes energy-efficient flywheel-driven uninterruptable power sources (UPS), diesel generators, and switchgear that enable the facility to run on its own power.

Benham incorporated low-maintenance and durable interior finishes to the center’s design, while projecting a modern and professional atmosphere. The interior design supports personnel in their work effort through smart, flexible, and highly functional workspaces that take into consideration technology, ease of use, and individual comfort. Interior design strategies included:

 Zero-emission interior finishes
Day lighting and views to the exterior
 Collection areas for recyclables
Increased control of temperature and lighting
Curved walls and colored LED lighting in the corridors

The overall interior design improved functionality of limited physical space and accommodated the increased number of personnel with efficient space-planning and furniture systems that provided storage and work tool accessories. In order for the workspace to be able to adapt to the center’s changing needs, the interior design also included:

Raised flooring to provide access to communications and power

Open office space with modular systems furniture

Additional building features include large open office areas with floor-to ceiling windows, sunshade devices to provide greater energy efficiency and a more comfortable work environment, a soothing color palette that defines the distinct zones within the building, and a sheltered rooftop terrace.
